Immigrant Youth are Mobilizing... Here is our second endorsement
Tuesday night, immigrant youth announced their plans to ensure the voters in our lives are registered and ready to cast their vote for pro-immigrant champions up and down the ballot on November 3rd.
From day one of his campaign, Trump has made it clear that he would dismantle DACA and deport as many immigrants like me as he could. He continues to distract and divide us from his corruption and failure to protect us from this pandemic by blaming new immigrants, Black people, and people struggling to make ends meet for our hard times. The best way for our nation to protect our communities is to make sure Trump is a one-term president.
But it's not just Trump. Immigrant youth have been bravely fighting for access to in-state tuition at our colleges and universities, and anti-immigrant legislators in the state capital have continually denied them the opportunity to get an affordable education by voting down the bill. That's why in 2018 undocumented youth, our teachers, and our allies knocked on thousands of doors to unseat an anti-immigrant incumbent and elect a real champion for all students.
Now we are proud to endorse Rep. Gloria Johnson for reelection in House District 13. Rep. Johnson was one of TIRRC Votes’s first endorsed candidates to win election. Immigrant youth launched a targeted campaign to unseat former Rep. Eddie Smith, an anti-immigrant incumbent, and elect Johnson, a staunch defender of public education, immigrant families, and progressive values. Gloria won her seat by 11 percent.
And we are ready to do it again.
Undocumented youth will be texting and calling voters across the state to make sure they know what’s at stake for immigrant families in this election and will vote for pro-immigrant champions up and down the ballot. We’ll also be tapping into our networks through innovative relational organizing tactics to make sure the people that know and love us are ready to vote to protect us.
On September 24th we are coming together virtually to launch our campaign. You will hear from our members, canvassers, and from elected officials about why being a pro-immigrant voter in this election is so important.
Together, we can make sure our leaders represent our values. See you on the 24th!
